My MVC Project for this Weekend

This weekend I have set aside some time to get familiar again with the Model-View-Controller (MVC) architecture outside .NET. I have found a very nice Java project online that uses MVC and shows how to apply it complex UI application that used multiple views and models.

If you are not familiar with MVC projects like this one, try as a starting point, researching the work by Ralph Schär on extdirectspring:
http://code.google.com/p/extdirectspring/w/list

He recently published a maven archetype to create an application skeleton using ExtJs4, Spring 3.1, Jpa, Hibernate and Spring Security
The learning curve may be a little steep, depending on your mileage and background, but it has been rewarding in my case.

Starting from Scratch in 3 “Painfully wonderful” Steps

Step 1
mvn archetype:generate

  • DarchetypeArtifactId=starter-archetype
  • DarchetypeGroupId=ch.ralscha -DarchetypeVersion=1.0.0
  • DarchetypeRepository=http://ralscha.ch/archetypes
  • DgroupId=com.mycompany -DartifactId=mynewapp -Dversion=0.0.1

Step 2
copy extjs4 files as instructed

Step 3
mvn jetty:run

Yay! And you’re done…NOT!
