Nerd-Geek Street Creds

It’s like nerd/geek street cred. You remember our conversation with Teddy. After talking with us for a little bit to validate our knowledge and interest about Star Trek and Star Wars, he came out like a beast with his Worldview. These are the smart people that are concerned about what others think. Thus they check to see not only if you have similar interests, but that you are a safe person to share their opinions without the lost look or potential lack of interest, but most importantly without the ridicule. Phrases like “That’s way over my head”, “Oh…you’re one of those people”, or “You like that stuff” stings for these people several times more than if the same happened to us.

Therefore, we should learn more about their interests so we can listen and engage better. Teddy is looking at attending graduate  law school at Columbia University after next semester. How much harder do you think someone like him will find others interested in his opinions about Klingons, Romulans, and Cardassians attending graduate school. I would rather know Teddy “The Sci-First Socio-Economics Nerd” before meeting Teddy “Colombia University Corporate Lawyer”…[yawn]…nap time before study more dreaming large Griffins with extra gravy.

For those new to the culture your indoctrination to the “Dark Side” of the Nerd and Geek Culture has begun. I purposely picked from the Science Fiction category, a franchise which I felt had the most longevity and global appeal, Doctor Who. For a British science-fiction television series that was produced back in 1963, and is still relevant today, definitely qualifies it as a franchise topping both criteria, longevity and global appeal…especially among young women.
