The main benefit of an FTZ is protection from tariffs on imported parts and materials. Plus, if you assemble various imported parts at an FTZ you are allowed by law to label it ‘Made in the USA’. http://www.inboundlogistics.com/cms/article/the-benefits-of-using-a-foreign-trade-zone/

Hilo has a designated area known as Hawaii Foreign Trade Zone Number 9 near the airport. No company that I am aware of is currently taking advantage of the zone in Hilo, but it is a great opportunity for the right type of business. You can literally import parts from China and South East Asia, screw-or-glue together parts to make a product, and label it ‘Made in the USA’. Our country truly is built on some of the fundamental laws of free enterprise. Free enterprise is separate from globalization as well as foreign trade agreements between countries.

My current distractions are 70s-80s-90s music [it's a very eclectic collection], ontology, information architecture, mobile device technology, medical bioinformatics, artificial intelligence, and nanorobotics.
